Around the first century or 2 C.E., Rome was a great city of contrasts. Rome had a population of nearly 1 million people crammed into this beautiful city. Slaves were a common site in ancient Rome. More than half of the population was made up of slaves. Rome was full of temples, large palaces, and surprisingly, flourishing gardens. There were foreigners from as far as Britain, Spain, and even Egypt! Most of the population lived in filthy neighborhoods, mostly crammed into small apartments, and most kids were lucky to live past the age of 10! Trades were common. Most valuable trades came from civilizations such as China. The Roman emperors provided the poor with entertainment such as the gladiator games, where people fought to the death for public entertainment, and chariot races, which were violent races where if you fell off your chariot you were likely to die!
